HISTORY

The Roman Catholic diocese had always been the ‘Light House’ of education and social service in the city of Allahabad and its adjoining districts. For the first time the Allahabad Diocese desired to step out of its normal protocol and venture into the field of ‘Health Care’ in a big way. This noble idea was expressed for the first time in 1974 and subsequently permission was granted to go ahead with the project of building a hospital in the city of Allahabad.

On a piece of part-farm land and part-waste land, housing a small building by the name of JIGYANSU KENDRA, the seed of Nazareth was sown. Geographically, this land-site situated at 13/A Kamla Nehru Road, had St Joseph’s College to its North, St Mary’s Convent to its West, Hathi Park to its South and Alfred Park to its East.

On 21st November, 1974, the then Bishop Rt Rev Alfred Fernandes, laid foundation stone of the hospital. The overall in charge of this project fell on the shoulders of Rev Fr Philip Noronha. In the meantime, the Rev Sisters of the Congregation of Sisters of Nazareth, Angamaly, Ernakulam, were drafted into this project and their invaluable services keenly desired. They willingly consented and on 8th December, 1975, a single-storied Nazareth Hospital was inaugurated. Simultaneously, planning for the C.S.N. Sisters’ residence, the doctors’ residential quarters and the other staff members’ residence was carefully laid out.

Rev Fr Philip Noronha was appointed the Founder Director and Rev Sr Goretti, CSN, as the First Matron of this hospital. They plunged into their respective work with full gusto and perseverance. The professional responsibility was shouldered by a few doctors who nurtured the growth and health care of this hospital. To name a few – Dr R K Nagar, and Dr T. B. Singh, who considered this hospital as their own baby.

To start with, it was a 50-bedded hospital, providing general, semi-private and private beds. There was a Labour Room, an Operation Theatre, Pathology, X-Ray unit and a Dispensary with out-door chambers. Total Health Care was rendered in the field of General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Owing to the dedicated services of the Doctors, Nursing Staff and Hospital employees and under the able and astute guidance of the Founder Director and the First Matron, the influx of patients increased in leaps and bounds. Selfless service with a personal touch was the key to the stupendous success.

The initial couple of years saw Nazareth secure a name for itself in the city of Allahabad. In 1977, the plans for construction of the first floor of the hospital were passed. After the initial spadework, the charge of Matronship passed on to Rev Sr Louisa, CSN who continued to serve this hospital in the same zealous vein.

In 1979, the construction work of the First Floor of this hospital was completed. Now the hospital bed strength stood at the century mark. The Ground Floor now had the Labour Room, Obstetrics and Gynecology ward, Dispensary, Pathology, X-Ray unit and Consultation Chambers for out-patients. The First Floor had the General Medicine, General Surgery and Paediatric wards together with the Operation Theatre. The year 1981 witnessed the change of Directorship from Rev Fr Philip Noronha to Rev Fr Isidore Fernandes. The other pillar of administration also had a change of hands – the Third Matron Rev Sr Alacoque, CSN took charge. The Ophthalmology department was added to the hospital and its field of health care expanded. The introduction of the ‘Hearse Van’ services under the auspices of Wheeler’s Seva Trust in 1983 was a unique feature in the history of Nazareth. This was indeed a boon for the worthy citizens of Allahabad. The fame, popularity, high standard of service and the professional efficiency of this hospital not only spread to the nooks and corners of this city but triumphantly invaded the adjoining suburbs and districts. This acted as an appetizer for both the Roman Catholic Diocese and the Hospital Administration – the need for further expansion therefore, became inevitable and the prime priority.

In July, 1984, the post of Assistant Director was added to the Hospital Administration and Rev Apolin Lobo was deputed this responsible work. Later. Fr Apolin took charge as the third Director in July, 1986.

The year 1988 was a special year for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allahabad. Rev Fr Isidore Fernandes, the second Director of the Hospital, became the Bishop of Allahabad and stepped into the shoes of Rt Rev Bishop Baptist Mudartha. This year for the first time, co-operation and aid was sought from abroad. The ‘White Fathers’ of Overseas Mission Service, Belgium were approached by the then Director, Rev Fr Apolin Lobo. The ‘White Fathers’ were convinced about the genuine health care services of Nazareth and promised their co-operation and financial help.

Commencing from the year 1989, Nazareth Hospital underwent a complete metamorphosis with intensive remodeling, expansion and structural modification under the architectural guidance of Mr Parvez Naseer. This same year on 10th Dec., 1989 the Second Floor of the Hospital was inaugurated by Sri Upadhyay, Secretary, Allahabad Development Authority. The Floor was totally dedicated to surgery related patients and had Surgical Wards and Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards. Now the hospital bed strength stood at 250 beds inclusive of General Beds, Private Rooms and A/C Rooms. Another landmark of this year, in the history of Nazareth, was the permission for the much- awaited and aspired for School of Nursing. This bore fruit on 15th June 1990 when the first batch of Nursing students numbering 20, was admitted under the tutelage of Nazareth’s School of Nursing. Rev Sr Stephany, CSN took charge of Principalship and the Nursing School took off towards a well-directed goal NIGHTINGALES OF NAZARETH.

The administration also had a change of Matronship. Rev Sr Brigit became the Fourth Matron. The promise of the ‘White Fathers’ was fulfilled in December 1990 when the Ultrasound unit was inaugurated by Sri Laxmi Chandra, IAS, Commissioner of Allahabad.

Already, the newly born School of nursing was nurturing the idea of expansion and behold on 8th December, 1991, Hon’ble Sri Kesari Nath Tripathi, Speaker of Vidhan Sabha, UP laid the foundation stone of the Nursing Students’ and Staff hostel. The same was inaugurated on 13th December, 1993 by Sri Subhas Kumar, IAS, Commissioner of Allahabad.

‘The White Fathers’ and the Belgium Government had not forgotten Nazareth. On 25th March, 1994, Her Excellency, Mrs C. F. Noppen, Ambassador of Belgium, paid us an official visit. She was not only satisfied but very much impressed by the proper utilization of their financial aid to this hospital. So much so, that she laid the foundation stone of the new OPD complex and promised further aid to this hospital. In 1994, there was infrastructural expansion in the form of addition and remodeling of the O. T complex, expansion of the Doctors’ Residential complex and the Class III and IV residential complex. On 18th December 1994, the new building of the School of Nursing was inaugurated by Sri Ravi Wadhawan, Mayor of Allahabad.

The School of Nursing saw the change over of the First Principal. Rev Sr Shaliny, CSN, became the Second Principal in 1995.

In 1996, there was a resurgence of expansion in this hospital. The Orthopaedic and ENT departments were inaugurated by Rt Rev Bishop Mudhartha in 1996. On 13th May, 1996, Dr S. N. Awasthy, Secretary, UP State Medical Faculty, Lucknow inaugurated the New OPD Complex. The highly sophisticated ICCU was inaugurated in April 1996 by Smt Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Mayor of Allahabad.

On 23rd May, 1996, the unique ‘Sponsored Beds’ was inaugurated by Dr (Smt) Rajendra Kumar Bajpai, Lt Governor of Pondicherry. This year also witnessed the invasion of Noninvasive/Minimally Invasive Surgery (Laparoscopic Surgery) at Nazareth. This year culminated with the inauguration of the Third Floor and Paediatric Ward bringing the bed strength of the hospital at about 275.

The following year, the two stalwarts of Administration were inducted or transferred. Rev Fr Joseph Mascarenhas joined as Associate Director and the Fifth Matron Rev Sr Leoni, CSN, took over the leadership from Rev Sr Brigit, CSN.

In 1998, the Fourth Director, Rev Fr Joseph Mascarenhas, became the Patriarch of the Nazareth Family and Rev Fr Ambrose D’Souza became his Assistant. This year the important health care unit, MICU was inaugurated and the modern Dialysis unit installed. The Lithotripsy unit was installed in the following year, 1999. In September 1999 Nazareth became a star in the horizon of the medical profession as it hosted the Mid-Term Conference of Endo Surgeons, North Zone. This also was the initiation of the Jubilee Celebration and renovations, paintings of buildings were mandatory. The Doctors’ Residential Complex was remodeled and expanded. Rev Fr Raymond D’Souza joined in July, 2000 as the Assistant Director, in place of Rev Fr Ambrose D’Souza. The UP Faculty gave the much desired permission to increase the Nursing Students strength from 25 to 40. However, a setback did not deter the perseverance of the School of Nursing. It was only for one batch of students that the increase in number to 35 was feasible.

The year 2000, the new millennium, was a land mark in the annals of Nazareth: Silver Jubilee of Nazareth Hospital. It was celebrated with pomp and show.

The following years had many milestones in the history of Nazareth. The Fourth Director, Rev Fr Joseph Mascarenhas, had the blessing of celebrating his Silver Jubilee as a Priest in 2000. The School of Nursing had a transition of leadership. Rev Sr. Shaliny CSN handed over the mantle to Rev Sr Preema. However, Rev Sr Preema had to leave for further studies and she handed over the baton to Rev Sr Eugene, CSN in 2006.

In 2003, the Assistant Director, Rev Fr Raymond D’Souza, went for a course in Hospital Administration. Rev Fr Reginald D’Souza joined the Nazareth Family in June, 2003.

In January, 2005, Rev Fr Joseph Mascarenhas migrated to Bangalore to the post of Associate Director, Finance at St John’s Medical College. In the interim period Rev Fr Reginald D’Souza ably handled the responsibilities of Director with the help of Rev Fr Alex D’Souza. In June, 2005, the Fifth and the Present Director Rev Fr K. K. Antony stepped into the portals of Nazareth. The other important stalwart of Nazareth also made way for another person. Rev Sr Leoni handed over the charge of Matronship to Rev Sr Brigit, CSN.

In 2007, Rev Fr Reginald D’Souza went to Mangalore for a course in Hospital Administration. He was succeeded by Rev Fr Vipin D’Souza as the Assistant Director.

During the course of these years, the hospital showed progress and a few of them are worth mentioning.

There was addition to a few departments like Dental, Dermatology, and Psychiatry. Technology and advancement was not lagging behind. Colour Doppler, upgrading of the Pathology Lab, upgrading of the Operation Theatre, and I.C.C.U. The infrastructure also had minor remodeling: extension of the central gas supply, addition of Deluxe Rooms, Renovation of Indoor wards, installation of new generators etc. The most welcome news was the inauguration of the Canteen, a boon for all.

The Nursing School had a lot to cheer about. Not only the number of students per batch was increased from 25 to 40 on a permanent basis, but there was an extension of the nursing hostel and home centre for exams.

The most important event was the inauguration of N.I.C.U. and the CT Scan unit. Another feather in the cap of Nazareth was ENDCON 2008, which was hosted by Nazareth Hospital. And probably the most satisfying event is the present celebration of the Silver Jubilee of Priesthood of our dear Director, Rev Fr K. K. Antony.

The Nazareth Hospital strides forward with pride and zeal for further improvement.
